Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder(ANSD)

So... we've had a very busy month. Those that are close to us know that Keira had "referred" on all of her newborn OAE screens. She had an ABR(auditory brainstem response) performed at the naval hospital here in Okinawa and the audiologist felt she had mild hearing loss in both ears. However, she is not a newborn specialist so they flew us(Keira & I; we self funded Adam & Peyton for those of you that are military and wondering about aerovac) to Hawaii for confirmation & further testing. Once in Hawaii we met with a pediatric audiologist who was great and who gave us the diagnosis of ANSD. The way it was explained to us is there is a timing issue with the hearing nerve and the brain... it was described as an almost tuned radio, there is speech but it's fuzzy or distorted. The hearing loss with ANSD can range from mild to profound and we aren't sure how well... or not well for that matter Keira hears. Once she can sit unassisted they will perform behavioral testing on her in a sound booth.
Here are a couple links on the disorder... http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/eyes/ansd.html

Right now we honestly don't really know much about what will happen in the future. Depending on her degree of hearing loss she may do fine with aids... or she may need CI's(Cochlear Implants).
They've done genetic testing to see if it's an inherited hearing condition, the results have not come back yet though. I'm thinking this may be the case. I've had trouble with my right ear since childhood and after all of this coming up with Keira I finally got it checked out last week. It turns out I have severe hearing loss in my right ear. As we get more acquainted and get more information about Keira's diagnosis I will be sure to update the blog...

Walkin' Girl!!

Peyton's started to walk on her Dino walker! She surprised me while I was doing dishes today and went from the TV stand to her walker and into the kitchen all by herself! Then when Dada got up she showed him how she walked!

In Okinawa!!!

We're in Okinawa!! Woooo-hooooo!!! It took forever to get here! We arrived last night at 6:00 local time, 5:00 a.m. (FL) and 3:00 a.m. (ID)!!! :) I haven't been able to take any photos yet, it's still raining from the tropical depression. So far we've been able to check out the BX- which is HUGE, Commissary and we went to Camp Foster to the Macaroni Grill with Laura & Steve and Andrea & Mike! We've only seen from the car the town between Kadena and Camp Foster- Andrea said maybe Monday we could go to the 100 yen store!! I'm excited bout that! It's like our dollar stores in the states but suposed to be WalMart quality stuff! Laura said we'll go to Jesco tomorrow too! I guess it's suposed to be like a mall and nice! I can't wait to take photos to show everyone! Hopefully the rain will let up tomorrow or later today and I'll be able to post photo's soon. Not sure how often I'll be able to post because the TLF here has no internet...

Boise Fun

We drove up to Boise yesterday and visited our favorite spots for the last time! :( We went to Fujiyama- our favorite Sushi restaurant! Yeah, yeah I know it's not like we won't be able to get sushi anymore! They've got the BEST sushi though!! We got a tuna roll, bronco roll and red snapper combo to split and it was SO good!! If anyone in Idaho is reading this and you wanna check it out if you go you've GOT to order the bronco roll- it's not on the menu but you can still order it- you will NOT be disappointed! It's THE best! It consists of shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, and asparagus then they flash fry it so it's got this crunchy tempura outer and then they drizzle eel sauce and spicy mayo on it- YUM!!! SO GOOD!!! We also visited Kid to Kid and Peyton got some more Baby Einstein DVD's, baby leg warmers and some more clips for her head bands and beanie hats! Fun day! :) Here are some more pics of Peyton mastering sitting up!
